Guwahati, Nov 14: The Gauhati High Court reviewed a Public Interest Litigation seeking a full investigation into the death of singer Zubeen Garg on Friday, November 14, directing the Assam government to place a status report on the inquiry by December 17.
The matter, listed as PIL/46/2025, came before a division bench of Justice Michael Zothankhuma and Justice Mital Thakuria. The petition was filed by Abhijeet Sharma and Palash Ranjan Baruah, with senior advocate K. N. Choudhury presenting the case.
The PIL lists multiple respondents, including the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of DONER, Ministry of Culture, the State of Assam, the High Commissioner of India in Singapore, Trend MMS Pvt Ltd, Syam Kanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma.
The court clarified that it will wait for the Special Investigation Team’s final report and will not intervene further until the document is filed. The directive places the onus on the Assam government to detail the progress of the inquiry in its submission.
Sharma and Baruah called the court’s move a step that places the investigation under clear scrutiny, noting that the status report will put any gaps in the probe on record before the court. Choudhury will continue to lead the case in the hearings ahead.
During the hearing, the bench commented on the heavy turnout before the Justice Saikia Inquiry Commission, noting that the situation placed pressure on the commission during its work on the Zubeen case.
