Guwahati, 22 Oct : The Gauhati High Court has quashed a criminal case against Akanksha Swarup over her comments on alleged human sacrifices at the Maa Kamakhya temple. The remarks were made during an interview with a relative of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, who was reportedly killed by his wife and her boyfriend in Meghalaya earlier this year.
Swarup had asked if Raghuvanshi’s death could be linked to a “tantric killing” due to a visit to Kamakhya. Following this, the Cyber Branch Police in Guwahati registered an FIR on 12 June under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
On 15 October, Justice Shamima Jahan ruled the FIR invalid, noting that Swarup had no intent to create enmity or hurt religious sentiments, though her remarks were “careless and not required.” The Court clarified that sections 196(2), 299, and 302 of the BNS did not apply, as the comments were not made in a place of worship and lacked malicious intent.
