GOALPARA, June 26: Goalpara College observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking recenly with an awareness programme aimed at sensitising students to the dangers of substance abuse and promoting a drug-free society.
The programme was organised by the 30 Assam BN NCC and 50 Assam Air Squadron NCC units of Goalpara College in collaboration with the UNESCO Association Guwahati, the NSS Goalpara College Unit and the Red Ribbon Club of the college.
Welcoming the participants, Principal Dr Subhash Barman stressed the need for collective efforts to combat the growing menace of drug abuse among the youth and called upon students to become ambassadors of awareness in society.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Goalpara, Nabaneet Mahanta attended the programme as the chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, he spoke about the harmful impact of drug addiction on individuals, families and society, and urged students to stay away from narcotics while actively participating in anti-drug awareness campaigns.
Resource person Dr Dulal Ch Baruah delivered a lecture on the causes, consequences and preventive measures related to drug abuse, highlighting the importance of awareness and early intervention in tackling the problem.
The programme was attended by Vice-Principal Loni Baruah, faculty members, NCC cadets, NSS volunteers, members of the Red Ribbon Club and students of the college.
The event was conducted by Dr Rashmi Hazarika, Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, while the vote of thanks was delivered by Kavita Basumatary, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, who expressed gratitude to the guests, organisers and participants for making the programme a success.
