Guwahati, Dec 17: Guwahati police have taken a man into custody for allegedly filing a fake theft complaint to cover up the misuse of company money, officials said on Monday. The accused has been identified as Dhruva Kalita, an employee of a private firm.
According to police, Kalita had approached Dispur Police Station claiming that ₹7 lakh had been stolen. However, during routine verification, officers found gaps and contradictions in his statement. This raised suspicion and led to a deeper probe into the complaint.
Police officials said the investigation revealed that the theft report was planned in advance. The money was not stolen by any outsider but had been taken by Kalita himself from the company. The incident reportedly took place during the daytime on Monday.
Acting on leads gathered during the investigation, the police conducted a search at Kalita’s rented house in the Sarusajai area of Guwahati. The entire amount of ₹7 lakh was recovered from the premises. He was taken into custody soon after the recovery.
Senior police officers said a case will be registered against Kalita for filing a false complaint and for misappropriation of funds. Further legal action will follow as per law.
