Guwahati, Nov 03 : Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania on Monday, 3 November, presented a three-year performance report of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and announced new initiatives for the city’s next phase of development.
Opening the briefing with condolences on the death of flutist Dipak Sarma, Sarania detailed GMC’s completed works and upcoming projects. Around ₹40 lakh has been earmarked for road construction and repairs, targeting 200 city roads, while ₹20 lakh will fund 200 new public toilets. Each of the 60 wards will receive ₹10 lakh for installing streetlights, along with portable high-mast lights for community use.
He said water supply expansion is underway through the Jal Board, and cleanliness campaign ‘Sikoon Guwahati, Mur Guwahati’ is promoting waste segregation. GMC has cleaned 441 drains so far, aiming for 555 and five rivers, supported by seven new suction machines.
The Mayor announced that the GMC headquarters will shift to a new six-storey building in Betkuchi, with the Uzan Bazar office set to become a market. Ten vending zones are being formalised, dog registration and vaccination drives planned, and trade licence processing simplified, with a training camp scheduled from 15 November.
Sarania added that 60 GMC security staff have been reinstated and new toll markets opened to support small traders.
