GUWAHATI, Feb 10: The Assam Development Initiative (ADI), a registered trust, organised an award ceremony for teachers and students at Sabhaghar in Silpukhuri. The event brought together principals, retired principals, teachers, students, authors and other eminent guests from across the state.
Welcoming the gathering, ADI president and Managing Trustee Upasha Boruah Phukan outlined the trust’s objective of supporting development initiatives in Assam, with a special focus on child development. She said ADI is currently working to promote awareness of value-based education (VbE) among school children and highlighted that the Value-Based Education and Child Development project, launched in mid-2018, has now become ADI’s flagship programme. She described value-based education as a present-day necessity and said ADI is a pioneer in introducing this approach in Assam, distinct from conventional value education.
After several years of implementation, with a long pause during the COVID-19 period, ADI decided to recognise outstanding teachers and students from schools practising the VbE programme. ADI founder and Chairperson Hiren Sarma from Houston, USA—the key person behind the project—presented the Sarangapani Awards to deserving teachers and students, along with ADI president.
Teachers Leena Sharma and Dipimoni Dutta from Guwahati Refinery High School and Kamal Kumar Sharma and Namita Das from Jalukbari High School, were honoured as Valued Teachers. Students Farhina Sultan and Amarjit Deka from Guwahati Refinery High School and Sibu Nath Das and Saurav Baishya from Jalukbari High School, were adjudged the most valued students.
ADI president also acknowledged the contribution of the VbE project team. Project Director Archana Borthakur, Senior Field Coordinator Kinkar Bora and Coordinator Nisha Das were recognised for their efforts. Sarula Tanti, VbE Field Coordinator working at Numaligarh Higher Secondary School and Dergaon Girls School, received the Sarangapani Award for Best Coordinator.
The programme featured inspiring addresses by Meenakshi Devi, Principal of Guwahati Refinery High School and Sarifa Ahmed, Principal of Jalukbari High School. Emotional messages from awardees and retired principals added warmth to the evening. The ceremony concluded with a musical tribute to Zubeen Garg by young singer Subir Bora, who performed a couple of the maestro’s songs.
