GUWAHATI, Aug 22: The student-driven organ donation awareness campaign ‘GiftLife’ has made a significant impact across residential areas and educational institutions in Guwahati. Running from August 15 to 19 and supported by Pathik, a prominent NGO in the North East, the campaign focused on debunking myths, providing crucial information, and successfully encouraging registrations for organ donation.
This year’s 78th Independence Day brought not only a surge of patriotism but also inspired this group of students to channel their efforts towards social service. Their initiative addresses a critical issue, as India has one of the lowest organ donation rates globally—five times lower than China. Annually, 500,000 people in India lose their lives due to a lack of available organs, with unused organs often being burnt or buried.
This combination of alarming statistics and the need for awareness led to the creation of this noble initiative. The efforts of young leaders Ahsash Agarwal, Raajvi Khadria, Devarsh Bajoria, Urvee Rathi, Nazifa Noornine, and Spriha Kashyap for their dedication to this cause is commendable. To join this movement, one can register through the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) official website.
