The Guwahati Traffic Police has issued a detailed advisory announcing traffic restrictions across key city routes ahead of Chhath Puja, which will be observed on 27 and 28 October. The restrictions will be in place from 11:00 AM on 27 October to 11:00 AM on 28 October, aiming to ensure the safety of devotees and smooth traffic flow during the two-day celebration.
According to an order from the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), entry of commercial and heavy goods vehicles within city limits will be prohibited during the restriction period. Only vehicles carrying puja materials or devotees will be allowed to move along M.G. Road, between Machkhowa Point and Chief Justice’s Bungalow Point. Slow-moving vehicles such as rickshaws and handcarts will also be barred from this route, except those used for puja-related activities.
To ease congestion, city buses from Khanapara heading towards Bharalumukh will use the G.S. Road – A.T. Road route and will not take the Panbazar ROB. Heavy vehicles, including inter-district and ASTC rural service buses, will be diverted via NH-27 from Jalukbari. Devotees are advised to use four-wheelers only, as six-wheelers will not be allowed. Meanwhile, H.B. Road from Sani Mandir to Panbazar Police Point will permit two-way traffic, while parking inside Lachit Ghat remains strictly prohibited.
Vehicles from Bharalumukh heading towards Panbazar or Chandmari will be diverted at Machkhowa Elevated Corridor via H.B. Road or A.T. Road. Those from Chandmari towards Bharalumukh or Jalukbari will be diverted near N.B. Hall, while light vehicles from Uzanbazar and Latasil will follow a special route via Planetarium Point, Lamb Road, F.C. Road, and District Library.
Special parking zones have been arranged at Lakhi Goli, Chamber Road, M.S. Road, S.R.C.B. Road, and the market side of M.G. Road. Vehicles at Sonaram Higher Secondary School Ghat must be parked inside the field. Meanwhile, no parking will be allowed along A.T. Road, MLN Road, ARB Road, SS Road, SRCB Road, H.B. Road, and T.R.P. Road from 7:00 AM on 27 October until the completion of rituals.
The Guwahati Traffic Police has urged Puja Committees to deploy volunteers, ensure proper parking management near ghats, and assist in maintaining smooth movement during the festival.
