GUWAHATI, JULY 26: With the 78th Independence Day round the corner, Guwahati Police have heightened security in the city, conducting late-night search operations to avert any possible danger. This is against the backdrop of increased vigilance in view of recent intelligence reports and arrests pertaining to militant operations.

In a surprise raid on Thursday evening, police officials conducted large-scale vehicle checks and area inspections in different parts of the city, including the high-security area outside the Assam Secretariat. All these operations were undertaken under rigorous security protocols, with special emphasis on verifying that no suspicious or banned items were being moved.

The heightened security follows the recent arrest of a number of suspected linkmen who are reportedly linked with the banned militant group United Liberation Front of Asom–Independent (ULFA-I) from various areas of Assam. The arrests have raised concerns about possible disturbing activities in the run-up to the August 15 celebration.

To deflect any upcoming threats, Guwahati Police intensified surveillance and accelerated night patrolling, especially in sensitive areas and high-density zones. Authorities have confirmed that similar operations will proceed in the next few days, with random inspections planned across various city zones to keep a firm security presence.

Residents were also asked to assist the current security measures and inform the nearest police station in case they experience any abnormal or suspicious occurrence. The authorities emphasized the role of the public in awareness and assistance towards keeping the national celebration peaceful.
