KOKRAJHAR, Oct 22: The district administration, Kokrajhar has taken several initiatives to improve the academic environment of the district. As a step towards this, it has set up a Hanging Library at Kokrajhar Girls’ Higher Secondary School on Saturday in a bid to improve the academic atmosphere of the district.
The first-of-its-kind hanging library in the district was inaugurated by deputy commissioner Kokrajhar, Varnali Deka, IAS at Kokrajhar Girls Higher Secondary School, which she has adopted as per the school adoption policy of the Bodoland Territorial Region.
On the occasion, sanitary napkins were also ceremonially distributed by her among the adolescent girl students in association with State Bank of India and sensitised them about menstrual hygiene.
In addition, assistant commissioner Rima Trishna Haloi trained the students for self-defence.
Speaking on the occasion, deputy commissioner of Kokrajhar, Varnali Deka said that every girl needs to know the techniques of self-defence as knowing about self-defence techniques can help protect them from any attack. She also said that the distribution of sanitary napkins among the adolescent girls is a tiny step to assist the girls as studies show that one reason for absence from schools by girls is due to the issues faced during menstruation.
She also lauded the officers of departments for their cooperation in supporting the district administration by donating various books for the hanging library.
“With these books, including autobiographies, fiction, epics, etc. we could create Kokrajhar’s first hanging library at Kokrajhar Girls’ Higher Secondary School. Hanging Library allows us to create libraries using minimum infrastructure- only need a wall and ropes to hang. We will replicate this in other schools too,” she added.
The initiatives generated a great deal of enthusiasm amongst the students who assured to use the library.
The programme was also attended by Jagadish Prasad Brahma, in-charge director, Education Department of BTC, chief manager of State Bank of India, Kokrajhar, Dhanen Brahma, executive engineer, Irrigation Satyen Sarma and other officials of Education department.
