Himanta Biswa Sarma announces Rs 100 cr grant for Samannay Kshetra development

JORHAT, July 11: Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday announced a Rs 100 crore aid for the development of Chaolung Siu-Ka-Pha Samannay Kshetra in Jorhat.

Sarma, who was in Jorhat to attend the 9th convocation ceremony of Assam Kaziranga University, made the announcement while addressing a public meeting at the Samannay Kshetra.

The chief minister said that the state government is committed to developing the Samannay Kshetra into an iconic tourist destination. He said that the Kshetra will be developed as a world-class cultural hub, with state-of-the-art facilities for tourists.

Sarma also announced that the second campus of Assam State Museum will be set up at the Samannay Kshetra. He said that the museum will showcase the rich cultural heritage of Assam.

The chief minister also announced a Rs 126 crore project for the revamping and beautification of Rang Ghar at Sivasagar. Rang Ghar is a famous Ahom-era monument.

Sarma also spoke about the efforts of the state and central governments to nominate Charaideo Maidams for UNESCO World Heritage Site list. He said that he is hopeful that Charaideo will be able to get the coveted tag.

Chief minister Sarma also announced that a history book on Bir Lachit Borphukan’s Gaurav Katha (life and his valour) will be brought out by a Sahitya Akademi recognised writer. The book will be translated into all Indian languages to propagate the valour of the legendary Ahom General and Ahom kingdom.

Sarma said that the book is expected to be released by January-February next year.

The chief minister also paid rich tributes to Swargadeo Chaolung Siu-Ka-Pha, the founder of Ahom rule in Assam. He said that Chaolung Siu-Ka-Pha was a visionary and a great administrator who laid the foundation of Assamese society.

He further added that a second campus of the Assam State Museum would be set up within the Samannay Kshetra premises.

Earlier, the chief minister had attended a prayer offered by observing traditional Tai rituals to pay tribute to the founder of Ahom reign.

The chief minister on Tuesday was accompanied by Assam cultural affairs minister Bimal Bora, Members of Parliament Tapan Gogoi, Pabitra Margherita, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, Members of Legislative Assembly Hitendra Nath Goswami, Taranga Gogoi, Bhaben Bharali, Rupjyoti Kurmi, along with a host of other prominent personalities.
