Himanta, Gogoi condole demise of Manipur theatre doyen Ratan Thiyam

GUWAHATI, July 23: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday condoled the death of theatre doyen Ratan Thiyam and termed him as the “brilliant ambassador” of the rich culture of Northeast.

Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi also expressed his grief over the death of the theatre personality and said Thiyam’s legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

Thiyam, a theatre luminary from Manipur, breathed his last at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal early on Wednesday. He was 77.

“A leading light of the Theatre for Roots movement, Shri Ratan Thiyam dedicated his life to bring indigenous theatre and art practices to the global stage. A Padma awardee, his productions were rich in both talent and messaging,” Sarma said in a post on X.

He said that the Sangeet Natak Akademi award winner was a “brilliant ambassador” of the rich culture of Manipur and the Northeast, and was able to use art as a vehicle to convey people’s emotions and aspirations.

“My deepest condolences on his demise. Om Shanti!” the CM said.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of Ratan Thiyam – legendary theatre maestro, visionary artist, and pioneer of India’s ‘theatre of roots’ movement. His legacy will continue to inspire generations,” Gogoi said in a post on X.

The Assam Congress president offered his heartfelt condolences to Thiyam’s family and the theatre fraternity. (PTI)
