NEW DELHI/GUWAHATI, June 1: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday held a series of meetings with senior Union ministers and the Vice President of India in New Delhi, discussing key aspects of Assam’s development agenda, including healthcare expansion, sports infrastructure, energy exploration, trade opportunities and the tea industry.
During his meeting with Union Health Minister J P Nadda, Sarma sought guidance and support for the implementation of several ambitious healthcare initiatives being undertaken by the state government.
Discussions focused on the establishment of new medical colleges, expansion of MBBS seats, introduction of advanced treatment facilities such as proton beam therapy and efforts to position Assam as a major hub for medical tourism.
The Chief Minister also acknowledged Nadda’s role in strengthening the BJP organisation in Assam and contributing to the party’s electoral growth in the state.
Sarma also called on Vice President C P Radhakrishnan and briefed him on Assam’s growth trajectory and ongoing development initiatives.
Describing the Vice President as a source of inspiration and guidance, Sarma said he looked forward to continued support in the state’s journey towards building a “Viksit Assam”.
The Chief Minister later met Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri and discussed strategies to expand hydrocarbon exploration and increase energy production in Assam.
The two leaders reviewed the state’s potential in the energy sector and explored ways to enhance Assam’s contribution to India’s economic growth through increased exploration and production activities.
In another meeting, Sarma held discussions with Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on the opportunities arising from India’s recent Free Trade Agreements.
The Chief Minister said the agreements could create new avenues for entrepreneurs, farmers and small businesses in Assam.
The meeting also focused on issues affecting the tea industry and measures to strengthen the sector.
Sarma also met Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports and Labour and Employment Mansukh Mandaviya, where discussions centred on strengthening sports infrastructure across Assam and enhancing welfare measures for workers.
The Chief Minister sought continued central support for the state’s efforts to develop world-class sporting facilities and transform Assam into a leading sports destination in the country.
The meetings underscore the Assam government’s focus on accelerating infrastructure development, improving healthcare services, promoting economic growth and expanding opportunities across key sectors as part of its long-term development vision. (PTI)
