JAGIROAD, Jan 16: The renowned Gova Deoraja Jonbeel Mela is poised to unfold on the banks of Jonbeel, situated four kilometers north of Jagiroad, spanning three days from January 18. This traditional fair boasts a rich heritage of exchange customs (barter), a practice that has faded in the modern, mechanised world. People from diverse ethnic groups hailing from Meghalaya, Karbi Anglong, and other parts of the state have already gathered at the fairgrounds, eager to participate in the exchange of agricultural products.
The Jonbeel Mela will feature attractions such as chicken fights, a mass fishing festival, and the historic royal exchange, i.e., barter. Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is slated to be the chief guest at the Raj Darbar scheduled for January 19 at Melathali. During the event, the chief minister will present Raj Bhatta to the 19 traditional Tiwa Rajas. The Morigaon district administration and the Tiwa Autonomous Council, Morigaon, have extended full support to ensure the smooth organisation of the mela.
Jursingh Bordoloi, the secretary of the Mela Organising Committee, has urged the state government to take special measures for the protection and development of the mela venue. The Fair Management Committee expresses concern about ensuring the proper protection of the expanded fair.
