DIPHU, Sept 4: The Government of Assam has constituted a One Man Inquiry Commission under Justice (Retd.) Anima Hazarika, former Judge of the Gauhati High Court, to investigate the Umrangso Mines Tragedy in Dima Hasao district, which claimed four lives and left several persons missing.
The Commission has been tasked with ascertaining the facts and circumstances leading to the incident and fixing responsibility on officers, individuals, mining companies or institutions found to be at fault.
It will also examine lapses, if any, in safety measures and compliance with regulations governing mining operations.
As part of the inquiry process, a public hearing will be conducted at the Assam Administrative Staff College, Guwahati, on September 9 and 11, 2025.
During the hearings, evidence and statements will be recorded from affected families, witnesses, organisations and other stakeholders.
The Commission has appealed to the public to participate in the proceedings so that all relevant accounts are placed on record and the causes of the tragedy can be comprehensively understood.
The findings of the inquiry are expected to provide guidance for ensuring accountability and preventing such incidents in the future.
