DIBRUGARH, June 12: The Dibrugarh police have arrested Samir Sarkar, a pipeline supervisor and survey engineer, for alleged negligence in the execution of the AMRUT project in Dibrugarh. Samir Sarkar, son of Nabin Chandra Sarkar from Shibpur village in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, was taken into custody in connection with case no. 327/2023 under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He is accused of failing to fulfill his responsibilities during the project.

The arrest comes after a tragic incident where a man named Abdul Rahim, aged 37 and hailing from Loharpatty, Dibrugarh, lost his life in an accident caused by a pothole on NH-37 near Grahambazar in Dibrugarh. It has been alleged that several holes were dug for the Jal Jivan Mission (JJM) in Dibrugarh, but the department responsible for the project did not fill the holes after completing their work. The open pothole caused the accident leading to the man’s death.

Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan has acknowledged that a total of 5,320 holes were dug on the roads of Dibrugarh for the AMRUT project. In response to these incidents, the Dibrugarh district administration has urged residents to report any potholes or open, non-barricaded drain work, construction potholes, or uncovered “manholes.” They have provided contact information for the district administration’s control room, including a phone number and a WhatsApp number, to report such issues. The administration has assured the public that immediate action will be taken to prevent any untoward incidents.

Additionally, the district administration has issued an appeal for everyone to follow basic safety protocols during the current monsoon season, particularly for the protection of themselves and children. They have stated their readiness to provide any necessary assistance at all times.
