GUWAHATI, Dec 27: The Advanced Centre for Integrated Farming Systems Research (ACIFSR) at Assam Agricultural University (AAU), Jorhat, organised specialised training sessions focusing on ‘Crop Diversification’ in Karbi Anglong. The training aimed to empower farmers with knowledge and strategies to maximise farm productivity and profitability.
The first training, titled ‘Crop Diversification towards High-Value Crops for Maximising Farm Productivity and Profitability in Hill Zone of Assam’, was conducted at Kuligaon, Karbi Anglong, starting from December 18, 2023. The second training, themed ‘Resource Management and Socio-Economic Development through Crop Diversification and Intensification’, targeted extension officers, development officials, and input dealers. This session took place in Bokajan, Karbi Anglong, from December 23, 2023.
The inaugural program for the training of officials in Bokajan was chaired by Ananta Shyam, deputy director of Agriculture, Karbi Anglong. Hunmili Terangpi, agricultural development officer of Bokajan circle, was also present during the ceremony. Dr Debasish Borah, chief agronomist at ACIFSR, AAU Jorhat, led both training programs.
The training sessions involved a team of scientists, including Dr Bhabesh Gogoi (Soil Science), Dr Monisha Borah (Agricultural Economics), and Lipika Talukdar (Agronomy), who served as resource persons. The discussions focused on the significance of crop diversification and its role in enhancing farm productivity, profitability, resource management, and the socio-economic development of the farming community.
These training programs were sponsored by ICAR-IIFSR (Indian Institute of Farming Systems Research), Modupuram, Meerut, UP, as part of a pilot project on crop diversification in the district. The interactive sessions facilitated farmer-scientist-officials discussions, fostering a deeper understanding of the benefits of crop diversification for sustainable agricultural practices and rural development.
