GUWAHATI, June 30: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday inaugurated the newly constructed stadium of Golaghat Government Bezbaruah Higher Secondary School and the newly built indoor stadium of the Golaghat District Sports Association.
He also laid the foundation stone for a ₹130-crore drinking water supply project aimed at providing clean and uninterrupted water to residents of Golaghat town.
The information was provided in an official statement.
Addressing a gathering at the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Sarma lauded the efforts of the school’s faculty and students, noting the institution’s historical contribution to Assam’s educational and cultural development.
He said the school has played a key role in promoting education in the mother tongue and has produced many distinguished alumni who have earned acclaim at the national and international levels.
He also praised the efforts of local MLA and Finance Minister Ajanta Neog and the school’s management committee for their initiative to revitalise the institution’s infrastructure.
The school’s old hostel campus, spread over approximately 12 bighas, has been transformed into a modern stadium complex, thanks to financial assistance of around ₹3.5 crore provided by Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.
The stadium complex also houses a newly established sports museum showcasing medals, jerseys, and equipment donated by several renowned sportspersons from Assam.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the facility will nurture emerging sporting talent in the region and contribute to the preservation and promotion of traditional Assamese sports.
Sarma further announced that the construction of a new building for the school is already underway with an allocation of ₹8 crore.
He also responded positively to suggestions from the school authorities for the preservation of the institution’s historic building and urged local representatives to ensure necessary steps are taken in this regard.
Highlighting the state government’s commitment to the holistic development of Golaghat district, Sarma laid the foundation for a ₹130-crore project to supply clean drinking water to around 55,000 residents of Golaghat town from the Dhansiri River.
He stated that the project will ensure round-the-clock access to potable water, marking a major improvement in public utility services in the region.
He also pointed to major ongoing infrastructure developments including the Golaghat Engineering College, Medical College, Cancer Hospital, the new District Commissioner’s Office, and extensive road connectivity upgrades under the Asom Mala Programme as evidence of the district’s rapid progress across various sectors.
Later in the day, the Chief Minister inaugurated the new indoor stadium of the Golaghat District Sports Association.
The double-storey stadium, developed under the City Infrastructure Development Fund (CIDF) of the Department of Housing & Urban Affairs, Government of Assam, was constructed at an approximate cost of ₹7.94 crore.
It includes six table tennis boards and five badminton courts, designed to meet the needs of athletes and sports enthusiasts in the district.
The inauguration ceremonies were attended by several high-ranking officials and dignitaries, including Minister of Agriculture Atul Bora, Finance Minister Ajanta Neog, Public Health Engineering Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, Minister of Tea Tribes & Adivasi Welfare Rupesh Gowala, Member of Parliament Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, MLAs Bhabendra Nath Bharali, Mrinal Saikia and Biswajit Phukan, Golaghat District Commissioner Pulak Mahanta, Vice Chancellor of Birangana Sati Sadhani Rajyik Vishwavidyalaya Prof. G. Singaiah, NRL GM (Operations) Sobhan Konwar, Chairperson of the Golaghat Municipal Board Dulumoni Borbora, and former international footballer Swadhin Dekaraja.
