DIPHU, Dec 1: Saidul Islam, a journalist and correspondent for the Assamese daily ‘Gana Adhikar’, passed away due to a heart attack while on a media tour organised by the District Information & Public Relations (DIPR, Hills), Diphu, Karbi Anglong.
The incident occurred in Gangtok, Sikkim, where Islam complained of uneasiness during sightseeing at a Buddhist monastery. He was immediately taken to the SPNM government-run hospital, but doctors declared him dead around 11:45 AM.
Islam, a resident of Rongnihang Pathar, Diphu also contributed to digital news outlets including ETV Bharat, Assam Times Post and was the founder of Hills Views Today. He was part of a four-day media tour comprising 26 journalists and accompanied by three DIPR officials. The tour, which began on November 29, has been cut short following his sudden demise with arrangements underway to return his body to Diphu by December 2.
Deputy Director of DIPR (Hills), Gagan Narzary, stated that Islam fell ill while visiting Gangtok’s tourist sites and despite immediate assistance from colleagues, could not be revived. Doctors are awaiting the arrival of family members before conducting a postmortem.
The Karbi Anglong media fraternity and the District Press Club have expressed deep grief over the loss, mourning the untimely passing of a dedicated journalist.
