DIPHU, May 5: Former chief executive member (CEM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and former MLA of Howraghat, Joyram Engleng have formally joined the Congress in a joining programme at Karbi Anglong District Congress Committee (KADCC) office here on Friday.
Engleng was the CEM during the Congress-ruled KAAC and in 2016 he was the BJP MLA from Howraghat LAC, but in the 2021 Legislative Assembly election he was denied a BJP ticket.
Joining the Congress along with Engleng were former executive member (EM) of KAAC, Bhupen Hasnu; executive member of BJP, East Karbi Anglong District Committee, Moheswar Raijung; Edward Topno; former president of KSA, Mohon Teron and Philip Terang and Chandra Lekthe from Nilip member of Autonomous Council constituency and others.
Engleng and others were welcomed into the Congress party by MP Gaurav Gogoi; president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Bhupen Kumar Borah and president of Karbi Anglong District Congress Committee (KADCC), Sum Ronghang. They were felicitated with a Congress party cap and scarf.
After joining the Congress Engleng said, “I am happy that the Congress leaders of the district and from the state have received me back into the party fold. For me, it is a ‘ghar wapsi’, homecoming to my party.”
He said his joining the BJP was accidental. Engleng urged party workers to work together wholeheartedly in strengthening the party without discriminating on the lines of religion, caste and community.
MP Gaurav Gogoi said more young leaders will join the Congress.
Gogoi said, “Our former chief minister and my father Tarun Gogoi has a deep love for the people of Karbi Anglong. During his tenure as the chief minister he has given development packages for the district. When I come here I feel at home.”
Gogoi also said, “Last year in May, the Congress held a conclave in Rajasthan to discuss the party’s tragedies, plans and programmes and we have seen a change in the party within one year. Those leaders dreamed of ‘Congress mukh’ from the country, but during Rahul Gandhi’s long walk from Kanyakumari to Kashmir it was seen that there is Congress in every locality, district and state. Those leaders who spent crores of money to stop Rahul Gandhi’s rath yatra went in vain. Power may go away from us for a short period, but the love for Congress will not go away from the people’s mind.”
The MP said the development seen in the Modi government is price rise. During the Congress government, the price of a litre of edible oil was Rs 60, now it is Rs 200. During the tenure former chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s government a month’s electricity bill was Rs 100 to 150 and now in Himanta Biswa Sarma’s government, it is Rs 400.
He further said, “One good parivartan in 2014 is Adani, a businessman from Gujarat who was running a pity business, but when Modi became the Prime Minister he became so rich that he became No. 3 world richest person. When Gandhi asked about the relationship between Modi and Adani in Parliament, the answer was not given by Modi. Out of fear, Modi thought of disqualifying Gandhi from MP.”
Gogoi claimed that Narendra Modi will no longer stay in power and Congress is coming back to power.
