DIPHU, March 19: Due to rampant illegal fishing, the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council ((KAAC) has banned fishing by electrocution and use of poison in rivers and hunting of wild animals and wildlife in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong.
An order issued by secretary, KAAC, department of Environment and Forest stated, “In view of rampant illegal fishing by electrocution, poisoning including hunting of wild animals and wildlife in the twin districts of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong, the authority of KAAC is pleased to ban illegal fishing by electrocution, poisoning including hunting of wild animals and wildlife under Section 2 (I), Section 2 (16), Section 2 (16) (a), Section 2 (16) (c), Section 9, Section 27, Section 44, Section 49 (B) and Section 51 of the wildlife protection act, 1972.”
The order also said that the divisional forest officer (DFO), Karbi Anglong, East Division and West Division and Hamren division shall ensure compliance accordingly.
