NAGAON, May 23: The Nagaon-based Kaliaboria Mancha, a common platform of natives of Kaliabor residing in Nagaon town and adjoining areas, felicitated eminent litterateur, literary critic and journalist Upendra Borkatoky at his residence in Ratnapur, Nagaon, on Saturday.
The organisation honoured Borkatoky in recognition of his recent receipt of a special award from the Asam Sahitya Sabha President.
Accepting the felicitation, Borkatoky spoke about the literary and cultural heritage of Kaliabor and said the name “Kaliabor” itself carries a unique significance.
“Holding on to this significance, we must keep Kaliabor’s rich literature and culture alive,” he said.
Emphasising the importance of preserving one’s identity and heritage, the veteran litterateur said it was essential for individuals, especially the younger generation, to remain connected to their roots.
He stated that only through such connection could the younger generation truly understand their heritage, culture and traditions.
Borkatoky also recalled the contributions of several eminent personalities from Kaliabor to Assamese literature and society.
The programme was attended by Mancha adviser Dr Arupjyoti Mahanta, president Kanak Hazarika, vice-presidents Krishnakanta Saikia and Padma Goswami, general secretary Bubul Bora, secretary Pallavjyoti Mahanta, treasurer Dilip Bora and publicity secretary Prasanna Sarma, along with several members and family members of Borkatoky.
The Mancha felicitated the litterateur with a phulam gamosa, seleng, jaapi and a citation, while wishing him good health and a long life.
On the occasion, Borkatoky also presented copies of his latest book, Sei Sakalok Kenekoi Paharo, to members of the Mancha.
