Karbi Anglong DC Clarifies Doubts On Police Intrusion Into Churches

UFC has urged the DC to act upon the matter and immediately call off such exercise

DIPHU, May 15: Karbi Anglong DC convened a meeting with UCF leaders and KA police to clarify doubts regarding police personnel intruding in various Churches in and around Diphu and Dokmoka town for collection of data.

A memo in this regard was submitted to the DC by UCF on May 14.

UFC, Diphu has submitted a memorandum to DC informing her about the sudden visit of police personnel in various churches in Diphu town area under Diphu police station and areas under Dokmoka police station under the pretext of collecting data has caused panic and a fear psychosis on the minds of general public. The UFC has urged the DC to act upon the matter and immediately call off such exercise by the authority concerned in the interest of public peace.

In the meeting the SP, Karbi Anglong, Sanjib Kumar Saikia informed the UFC members that necessary data collection was done as per directive from Director General of Police, Assam regarding the safety of Christian institutions and personnel and there was no any other negative aspect to it.

Based on the directive from higher authority police personnel have visited various Churches and educational institutions for collection of data regarding security issues faced by the Christian institutions.

In statement issued from the office of Superintendent of Police, Diphu said based on the memorandum submitted by Assam Catholic Education Trust (ACET) to the Director General of Police, Assam on 12/02/2024 regarding the safety of Christian institutions and personnel, Assam Police headquarters issued instruction to all Superintendents of Police to collect information of all Christian institutions and to ensure safety and security of such institutions and personnel.

Accordingly, Karbi Anglong Police also collected and compiled a list of all such institutions in the district for ensuring safety and security of such institutions. However, later on Wednesday it has been learnt that one organisation namely United Christian Forum (UCF) of Diphu, Karbi Anglong has submitted a memorandum to the District Commissioner, Karbi Anglong stating that police personnel are collecting information of all Christian institutions of the district without any official mandate causing a fear psychosis among the public.

In today’s meeting the UCF members attending were president, Rev Solomon Rongpi and secretary, Rev Primingson Millick and members Dilip Kathar; general secretary, Karbi Anglong Baptist Convention, Rev Kamson Rongphar; executive secretary, Nihang Karbi Baptist Association, Rev Tenson Bey; Borsing Tisso; Rev Luke Ronphar; Rev Abraham Taro and Rev James Rongpi.
