KOKRAJHAR, Dec 27: Kokrajhar district administration has been taking a number of steps to reduce road accidents and minimise fatalities in the district.
On Monday, a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee (DRSC) was held in the conference hall of the deputy commissioner’s office, Kokrajhar under the chairmanship of deputy commissioner cum chairperson of DRSC of Kokrajhar district, Varnali Deka, IAS.
The chairperson reviewed the measures taken by all departments including traffic, transport, highways, PWD, etc., for the enforcement of road safety. Stressing on the importance of taking strict measures in road safety, the deputy commissioner urged all departments including police and transport to take strict action against bike stunts, rash and drunk driving.
She also instructed the Transport department and Public Works department to conduct a survey and arrange for road safety signages and speed breakers where accidents take place on a regular basis. District administration and police would also intensify patrolling regularly and set up checkpoints at various places. She further called for strict vigilance at picnic spots in the ongoing picnic season to curb cases of drunk and rash driving.
The meeting discussed in detail the implementation of the resolutions adopted in the last meeting of the Road Safety Committee held and the measures taken to prevent road accidents in the district.
The house further stressed on creating road safety awareness among the students of schools and colleges. The NHAI has been asked to make arrangements for adequate lighting on under construction sections of the roads as these are found to be accident zones especially in the non-daylight hours.
It was also unanimously decided to carry forward the ‘No Helmet No Fuel’ drive at all fuel stations as non-wearing of helmets was seen to be a leading cause of fatalities.
The meeting also discussed effective implementation of the integrated Road Accident Database (iRAD) application so that all road accidents taking place in the district can be scientifically documented.
Likewise, it was decided to make use of the Infrastructure Snapshot Kokrajhar app to log in traffic violations by enforcing agencies. Public has also been requested to use the app to report traffic and road safety violations.
The meeting was attended by superintendent of police, Kokrajhar, Pushparaj Singh, IPS, additional deputy commissioner (Transport), joint commissioner of Transport cum CHD, in-charge district transport officer and other stockholders of the DRSC, Kokrajhar.
