Lachit Divas observed at MSSV, Guwahati

GUWAHATI, Nov 28: Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya, Guwahati unit celebrated the 400th birth anniversary of Mahabir Lachit Borphukan by organising a ‘Drama Recitation and Discussion’.
The drama ‘Mahabir Lachit’ which was composed by Prof Jagadish Patgiri and the multidisciplinary discussion panel was moderated by Prof Sanjib Goswami. The 6-scene drama was recited by Mrinal Kr Gogoi, assistant professor and after every scene the panel discussed various research themes that emerged from that scene.
The panelists – Prof Jagadish Patgiri, Prof Sanjib Goswami, Dr Bimal Baisya, Dr Deepsikha Carpenter, Dr Ujjwal delved deep into the main character of Lachit Borphukan and the discussions went far beyond the Battle of Saraighat. Several events in Assam’s history were compared, contrasted, and analysed with the teachings of Gita, events of Mahabharata, etc.
Themes of unity, patriotism, nationalism, cultural nationalism, poly-culturalism, and leadership were also focused on.
The drama ‘Dekhotkoi mumai dangar nhoi’ scene was analysed in relation to Shakespeare’s ‘Merchant of Venice’, especially Shylock.
The programme was held at the university’s auditorium where Prof Mridul Hazarika, vice chancellor of the university; Ramen Deka, vice chairman of State Innovation and Information Aayog; Dr Shekhar Sarkar, deputy registrar (Admin); Gouri Prasad Sarmah, assistant public relation officer, faculty members and students were present.
