GUWAHATI, July 30: Lakshman Prasad Acharya was officially sworn in as the 32nd Governor of Assam during a swearing-in ceremony at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati on Tuesday. Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi of the Gauhati High Court administered the oath of office to Acharya.
Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attended the swearing-in ceremony and congratulated Acharya on assuming the post of the Governor. Following the event, the chief minister took to X to share his congratulations, “Attended the Swearing-in ceremony of Shri @Laxmanacharya54 ji as the 32nd Governor of Assam.”
The First Lady of Assam Kumud Devi, Speaker, Assam Legislative Assembly Biswajit Daimary, and other ministers of the state government, including Transport minister Keshab Mahanta, Education minister Ranoj Pegu, Housing & Urban Affairs minister Ashok Singhal, Panchayat and Rural Development minister Ranjit Dass, Agriculture minister Atul Bora, Finance minister Ajanta Neog, Power minister Nandita Gorlosa, Water Resources minister Pijush Hazarika, Tourism minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, Handloom and Textile minister UG Brahma, Labour Welfare minister Sanjay Kishan, Cultural Affairs minister Bimal Bora, former Union minister Bijoya Charabarty, a host of MLAs, and senior government officials were also present at the swearing-in ceremony.
Governor Acharya, in his post on X, shared his thoughts after being sworn in as the 32nd Governor of Assam. He began by expressing his gratitude: “Today, after taking blessings at the feet of Maa Kamakhya, I took oath as the Governor of Assam, a state blessed with rich culture.”
He extended his thanks to President Droupadi Murmu for the opportunity, “Many thanks to Honorable President Madam Mrs Draupadi Murmu ji for discharging this new responsibility. This role is not just a post for me but a unique opportunity to serve the country and the state.”
Acharya concluded with a hopeful message, “On this occasion, I pray for the happiness, prosperity and fame of the people of Assam. With renewed resolve and energy, we will together take the state to greater heights.”
It may be noted that Governor Acharya was born on October 3, 1954 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. He was born to the late Kalidas Kharwar and late Pyari Devi. He is married to Kumud Devi and has a daughter.
Lakshman Prasad Acharya is a Sahitya Ratna (Hindi) known for his contributions to education and public service. He started his career in his own hometown as a teacher in 1973 at Bhartiya Shishu Mandir in Ramnagar, Varanasi. On June 22, 1977, he initiated a campaign – ‘Shishu Shiksha Gaanv Ki Aur’ (Child Education in the Village) with the sole aim of establishing schools in the remotest villages. He established institutions of learning, such as Sishu Shiksha Niketan and Shri Kalidas Shiksha Sansthan Junior High School, in 33 far-flung locales. His efforts extended to even more distant areas in Madhya Pradesh. Furthermore, his dedication to education led to the creation of Smt Pyari Devi Intermediate College.
In 1990, Lakshman Prasad Acharya took his first step into politics by becoming the divisional president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the Ramnagar area of Varanasi. This marked the beginning of his active political journey. In 1995, he assumed the role of general secretary for the combined district of Varanasi, which included Varanasi and Chandauli. In 1996, Acharya’s political journey led him to become the district president of the BJP for the Varanasi district. He was also the chairman of Uttar Pradesh Fisheries Development Corporation (UPFDC).
In 2015, Acharya was elected as a Member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council (MLC). In recognition of his devoted service and contributions, he was re-elected for a second term as a Member of the UP Legislative Council in 2021. He continued to represent the interests of the people in this capacity until his appointment as the Governor of Sikkim on February 16, 2023. Hereafter, he continued to serve in Sikkim until his appointment as the Governor of Assam and additional charge of the Governor of Manipur.
