NAGAON, July 7: The Puranigudam Unit of the Asomiya Bhasha Swahid Smriti Raksha Somitee, in collaboration with Kolong Kola Kendra, paid tribute to Shishir Nag, a martyr of the 1960s Assamese language movement, at a commemorative event held at the Kolong Kola Kendra premises in Puranigudam on Monday.
According to an official statement, the programme began with the ceremonial garlanding of Shishir Nag’s portrait, led by Prafulla Kalita, President of the Puranigudam Unit of the Smriti Raksha Somitee. Tributes were also paid to other martyrs of the 1960 and 1972 language movements.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Kolong Kola Kendra Vice-President Ashwini Sarma, Montul Kumar Sarma, Purnananda Barik, Dipali Bora, Chittaranjan Bora, Rajiv Goswami, and Tilak Kumar Gayan.
In his remarks, Prafulla Kalita reflected on the sacrifices made by the language martyrs and stressed the ongoing responsibility to honour and preserve the Assamese language. Delivering the presidential address, Ashwini Sarma highlighted the unifying role of language in society and paid homage to those who laid down their lives for its protection.
Students of Kolong Kola Kendra and several notable local residents also participated in the programme.
