LGBI Airport gears up to celebrate art festival

GUWAHATI, Aug 10: The Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport has geared up to observe the 75th Independence Day with unique initiative. The airport authorities in collaboration with ‘Craftroots’ –a group that promote the empowerment of artists are organising a ten-day passengers engagement event ‘Hastkala’ till August 16. The event is focusing on two traditional ancient art forms- Madhubani painting and Gond painting.
Madhubani Painting is an ancient painting of 2500 years old craft form. It is a popular kind of art in Bihar and the Mithila region of Nepal in India. These paintings are made with natural colours and dyes and adorned with striking geometrical patterns utilising twigs, fingers, brushes, matchsticks and nib-pins. These paintings are used in celebrations and events like weddings, births, Surya shasti, Holi, Upanayanyan, Kali Puja and for other significant holidays.
Whereas, Gond painting is also an ancient painting of 1400 years old craft form. It is a famous folk art of the Gond tribal of Central India. The word ‘gond’ comes from the word ‘kond’ which means ‘green mountains’ and tribal people are called ‘gondis’ as they live mainly in the lush green mountains of Madhya Pradesh.
Passengers can watch the art form live and can experience the ‘Hastkala’ platform in the city side after arriving at the airport.
