In his inaugural speech, he said that —- literature would be kept alive by readers, not by the government. The government can only keep the writer alive by giving literary pensions, not literature. The number of readers in Assam is declining rapidly. This is a matter of deep concern. A book with good literary elements does not sell even two thousand copies in Assam. He added that — in the developed countries of the world like Japan, France etc., society is not busy with digital media. However, in countries like South Africa, brain exercise is decreasing due to the presence of mobile phones in hand. Therefore, India has never been in the same situation as South Africa. He said that only the reading habits of book can improve the society. The inaugural ceremony was attended by the president of the book fair management committee and Morigaon district commissioner Devashish Sharma. The event was attended by Laharighat MLA Asif Nazar, Morigaon District Sahitya Sabha President Harmohan Kalita, Morigaon District Poetry Association president Anirudha Deka, retired principal of Dimoria College Ramcharan Bharali and many other dignitaries. The event was moderated by Khagen Mahanta, general secretary of the book fair management

committee. The book fair will also celebrate National Voter’s Day and a programme entitled ‘Student’s Day’ will be held tomorrow. The event will be inaugurated by Morigaon district commissioner Devashish Sharma. Additional district commissioner Anusuya Sharma, inspector of schools in the district Apurba Thakur and chief secretary of Rangmela Shishubani Arun Bhagwati will be the chief guests.
