MARHERGITA, Jan 31: Me-Dam-Me-Phi, the traditional festival commemorating the forefathers of the Tai Ahom community, was held on Saturday at the Chao Cheng Ren premises in New Colony, Margherita, Tinsukia district.
Organised annually by the Margherita Co-District Me-Dam-Me-Phi Celebration Committee, the two-day programme included traditional puja and worship on the second day, followed by the hoisting of flags. The main flag was hoisted by committee president Mintu Deodhai Phukan, while other flags were raised by office bearers and distinguished guests.
The celebrations also featured the inauguration of a Rangmancha (stage), built at a cost of Rs 23 lakh from funds allocated by Union Minister Pabitra Margherita and a guest house constructed with Rs 10 lakh from the MLA’s fund, inaugurated by Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma along with Shanti Gogoi and Girin Buragohain.
In the afternoon, an open meeting hosted by Rana Jyoti Neog, chief general secretary of the committee, was attended by several dignitaries. During the event, the “Gyati Mahiyan” award was presented to Girin Buragohain of Jagun Phaneng and ten other distinguished persons were felicitated.
Our Golaghat Correspondent adds: Me -Dum -Me-Phi, a traditionally and spiritually significant festival of the Tai Ahom community of Assam , was observed at Samannay khetra, organised by the district committee of the Tai Ahom Yuba parishad, Assam and the people of Golaghat , praying for peace and prosperity of the people of Assam and the world at large.
Sanjib Hondique , president of the organising committe, hoisted the flag , followed by the floral tribute to Zubeen Garg. Essay competition among the school students, traditional dress competition was also held on the occasion. Noted writer Dr, Ajit Baruah, Film Maker Dinesh Gogoi, Social Worker Lachit phukon were present as distinguished guests.
Our Demow Correspondent adds: The 8th annual Me-Dam-Me-Phi festival was celebrated on Saturday at the Madhupur Ekarani Tai Ahom Culture Preservation and Tai Language Publicity Committee Office premises, under the patronage of the people of Madhupur, Ekarani, Laguabari, Naharhabi and in association with the people of Demow. The day-long programme, which began at 11 AM, included traditional rituals, cultural activities and community participation.
Meanwhile, the Demow Ahom Samaj in association with ATASU Demow Regional Committee also celebrated Me-Dam-Me-Phi 2026 at the Demow Public Playground on January 30 and 31. The celebrations began with Furalung Puja on the afternoon of January 30, followed by Damphi Puja on January 31. The festival featured various competitions for students and concluded with a community feast, fostering cultural unity and preserving the traditions of the Tai Ahom community.
