SIVASAGAR, Jan 16: The Rongpur Mela on the occasion of Magh Bihu featured a buffalo fight (Moh-Juj) at Rupoh Pathar, adjacent to Rang Ghar Bakori in Sivasagar. Organised by Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, the event marked the return of Moh-Juj after a gap of nine years, drawing the attention of hundreds of curious onlookers. However, the crowd was left disappointed as none of the five pairs engaged in fierce combat, with the first pair, Babu and Kulai, merely sniffing at each other before sprinting in opposite directions through the crowd.
Buffalo fights and castrel fights were integral to the Ahom era’s royal sports and games, starting during the reign of Swargadeo Rudra Singha and reaching their peak during Swargadeo Pramatta Singha, who had the royal pavilion Rang Ghar built with bricks, lime mortar, and stones in 1746.
Diganta Tamuly, president of Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, Sivasagar, inaugurated the Rongpur Mela by hoisting the Bihuwan. Cultural troupes from Mising, Tiwa, Karbi, and Tai Ahom communities showcased Bihu dance performances in front of the historic Rang Ghar. During the open meeting, MP Topon Kumar Gogoi released the souvenir ‘Che-mun’, edited by journalists Joyjyoti Gogoi and Pradip Gogoi. The event was attended by leaders from ATASU, AASU, and other organisations.
The Mela attracted a large crowd, with NGOs and local entrepreneurs displaying their wares.
