MSU & CT scan project benefits the public: TMCH principal

TEZPUR, Sept 16: The mobile stroke unit and CT scan project in the state has been implemented in Sonitpur as a special initiative to the health sector of the country. The project was launched on September 25, 2020 in the Sonitpur and Dibrugarh district as the first initiative in the state. In Sonitpur district, it was launched in collaboration with Tezpur Medical College Hospital and Tezpur Baptist Mission Hospital which provides free CT scans and expensive medicines to severe stroke patients within the four and half hours of the injury.
In a press conference held in Tezpur Medical College Hospital on Thursday, Dr. Karuna Hazarika, principal, Tezpur Medical College Hospital, Dr. Dijen Das, faculty of Medicine, Dr. Benudhar Nath, faculty Tezpur Medical College Hospital, Swarup Kalita, regional manager of 108 ambulance service elaborated that the ambulance, which costs Rs 6 crore, will provide CT scans to patients within the stipulated time frame and injections for thrombosis as required in consultation with experts from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, CMC Ludhiana and Tezpur Medical College and will be shifted to the stroke unit of Tezpur Medical College Hospital or Baptist Christian Mission Hospital for further treatment.
Dr. Hazarika, principal, TMCH further requested the cooperation of all concerned including stroke victims in proper implementation of the project while stating that treatment of patients under the project is totally free. The 108 ambulances will provide assistance to the victims in case of any difficulty.

It is worth mentioning that the mobile stroke unit (MSU) is a ‘state of art’ facility with the latest CT scanner, provision of telemetry and thrombolytic therapy. This will bring the services of hospitals to the patient’s door steps by providing acute stroke care management. Mobile stroke units (MSU) will provide services like imaging, mobile laboratories, telemedicine (connection with a hospital), appropriate medication and assessment tools. This will serve the purpose of reducing the time from the symptom onset to treatment (OTT). Staff of the MSU have been trained in all aspects of stroke care. A multi-disciplinary team of doctors has been formed to provide consultancy through Telemetry. Training manuals have been developed for doctors, paramedics, CT technicians and drivers.
