NAGAON, Nov 6: The Nagaon Municipality Board has implemented stringent measures against the usage, storage, and sale of single-use plastic bags under 75 microns in thickness and other plastic items under 120 microns, effective immediately, citing sections 6, 8, and 25 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

In a notification issued today by the Executive Officer of the Nagaon Municipality Board, shopkeepers, vendors, and traders were alerted that a spot fine of up to Rs 500.00 will be levied on anyone found using single-use plastic items in the market or personally. The concerned authority has provided a 30-day grace period for traders to transition to alternative options such as cotton, jute, or bamboo carry bags for their goods.

The notification explicitly warned that after the 30-day grace period, the Municipality Board would not only enforce fines up to Rs 500 but also revoke trade licenses and cut off essential services, including power supply, water, and sanitation facilities.

The board had initially prohibited single-use plastic items in the town via a notification issued last December. Despite the ban, there has been ongoing use of single-use plastic carry bags by shopkeepers, vendors, and traders throughout the municipality areas.
