GUWAHATI, May 8: The process for formation of the new NDA government in Assam will formally begin on May 10 with the election of the BJP Legislature Party leader, while the swearing-in ceremony of the new government will be held on May 12 in Guwahati.
Outgoing chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the BJP Legislature Party meeting would be held at 10 am on May 10 to elect the party’s leader in the Assembly.
“The BJP Legislature Party meeting will take place at 10 am on May 10. The leader of the BJP Legislature Party will be elected there,” Sarma told reporters on Friday.
He said the meeting would be held in the presence of Union minister J P Nadda, who will attend as the party’s central observer, and Haryana chief minister Naib Singh Saini, who has been appointed co-observer.
According to Sarma, a joint meeting of NDA legislators comprising the BJP, Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland Peoples’ Front will be held at 11 am to formally endorse the NDA leader.
“After the BJP leader is elected, it will be ratified by NDA allies — the BPF and AGP. Following that, the elected BJP leader will stake claim to form the government before Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya,” he said.
The NDA delegation is scheduled to meet Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at 12 noon on May 10 to formally submit its claim to form the government.
Sarma said the swearing-in ceremony would be held on May 12 at 11 am at the Veterinary Field in Khanapara.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the ceremony along with chief ministers from several states, Union ministers, industrialists, Vaishnavite religious heads and Satradhikars.
He said BJP and AGP booth committee presidents from across Assam, along with elected representatives of Gaon Panchayats, have also been invited to the programme.
The NDA returned to power in Assam for a third consecutive term after securing 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly.
The BJP won 82 seats, while its allies AGP and BPF secured 10 seats each. Sarma had tendered his resignation to the Governor earlier this week and was asked to continue as caretaker chief minister until the formation of the new government. (With inputs from PTI)
