DIBRUGARH, May 5: Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will be receiving the first cargo ship to Sittwe Port in Myanmar from Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata on May 9..
The minister is likely to inaugurate regular transit of cargo ships between Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata to SittwePort in Rakhine state of Myanmar, heralding a new age of transportation between two countries, an official statement said on Friday.

Union minister Shantanu Thakur on Thursday flagged off the inaugural cargo shipment to operationalise Sittwe Port in Rakhine, Myanmar, from Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port.
According to an official statement, cargo ship MV-ITT LION (V-273) carrying 20,000 bags containing 1,000 metric tonnes of cement will reach Sittwe Port on May 9.
The Sittwe port development is a part of the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project (KMTTP), which aims to provide alternate connectivity from the Eastern coast of India to the Northeastern states through the Sittwe port. The port will enable multi-modal transit connectivity with South East Asia, acting as a bridge with other countries such as Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal.
Addressing a press conference at Dibrugarh, Sonowal praised the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has put Northeast India at the forefront of India’s developmental agenda.
“This is the true reflection of implementation of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ philosophy of Modi ji,” Sonowal added.
The Union minister further added that once the port is fully operationalized, the Kaladan Multi Modal Transport TP will provide an alternate and more feasible route for trade and transit, saving time, money, and excelling efficiency.
Sonowal stated that the cost of transportation of goods from Kolkata to Aizawl has seen a drop by more than 50 per cent. Similarly, goods from Kolkata to Agartala will incur much lesser cost and time via this route.
Union MoS Rameswar Teli, Dibrugarh Municipal Board (DMB) chairman Saikat Parta, and other senior BJP leaders were also present at the press meet.
