GUWAHATI, Nov 26: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is setting new benchmarks in renewable energy adoption by enhancing its solar energy capacity to an impressive 7399 kWp as of October 2024, an official statement on Tuesday.
This significant achievement reflects NFR’s unwavering commitment to sustainable development, energy efficiency, and environmental conservation.
Between April and October 2024, NFR commissioned an additional 1277 kWp of solar power across its divisions. The Rangiya Division took the lead with 672 kWp of new installations, followed by the Lumding Division with 545 kWp and the Alipurduar Division contributing 60 kWp.
The cumulative solar capacity is now spread across key divisions and facilities, with the Lumding Division leading at 2882 kWp, Rangiya Division at 1146 kWp, Katihar Division at 610 kWp, Alipurduar Division at 441 kWp, and Tinsukia Division at 190 kWp.
Workshops at New Bongaigaon and Dibrugarh have also made significant contributions, each housing 1000 kWp solar plants. Additionally, the NFR headquarters has a solar power generation capacity of 130 kWp.
This expansion is part of NFR’s broader efforts to reduce its dependence on conventional energy sources, curbing its carbon footprint while advancing towards renewable energy solutions. These initiatives are aligned with India’s national goals of sustainable development and clean energy adoption.
Looking ahead, NFR is making substantial progress in further boosting its solar energy infrastructure. Currently, projects are underway to install an additional 3935 kWp of solar capacity across its network. Moreover, tenders have been floated for a massive 40,411 kWp of solar projects, aiming to position NFR as a leader in green energy within the Indian Railways network.
The NFR’s ambitious solar energy initiatives are part of its “Go Green” campaign, a testament to its dedication to environmental stewardship and energy conservation. By integrating renewable energy into its operations, NFR is reducing carbon emissions and setting a benchmark for eco-friendly railway services.
These efforts underline NFR’s mission to deliver sustainable and efficient transportation solutions while contributing to a cleaner, greener future for the nation.
