GUWAHATI, July 29: In a bid to promote environmentally sustainable practices and improve waste disposal mechanisms in its residential areas, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has undertaken a comprehensive survey for the establishment of an Integrated Garbage Treatment System in Maligaon and Pandu Railway Colonies under the Lumding Division.
According to an official statement, the survey is being carried out by the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the NFR.

IIT Guwahati has been entrusted with the responsibility of conducting detailed field assessments and providing technical consultancy for the project.
The study will culminate in the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR), which will include specifications regarding the required infrastructure, cost estimates, waste treatment methodology, and proposed timelines for execution.
The proposed system will adopt a holistic approach to waste management, with a focus on source-level segregation, scientific disposal of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, composting, and recycling.
The model will be developed in accordance with the guidelines laid down by the Swachh Bharat Mission and other national waste management protocols.
Officials said that the initiative is aimed at improving hygiene, cleanliness, and the overall living conditions of railway employees and their families residing in the two colonies.
The project also aims to reduce the environmental footprint of the railway system by creating a near-zero-waste model in residential areas.
The system is expected to act as a replicable prototype for other railway establishments in the region and beyond.
The NFR, through this collaboration with IIT Guwahati, reiterated its commitment to sustainable development, infrastructure modernisation, and environmental stewardship.
The official statement underlined that the project would contribute to long-term ecological balance and public health, while setting new standards in waste treatment and urban sanitation within railway colonies.
