Guwahati, May 30: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a charge sheet against Paresh Baruah, the leader of ULFA-I, and five of his associates for allegedly plotting attacks on army camps with an anti-India agenda, the central agency reported on Wednesday.
The case pertains to a 2023 terror attack on an army camp in Assam. The NIA has charged the individuals with various criminal offenses, asserting that the banned ULFA-I orchestrated and executed the attack. The incident involved two motorcyclists throwing grenades at the Kakopathar army camp in Tinsukia district on November 22, 2023, though no injuries were reported.
The charge sheet, presented before the NIA special court in Guwahati, names Baruah and his accomplices as the primary conspirators and perpetrators of the attack. While Parag Borah and Bijoy Moran were arrested last December, other suspects remain at large. The charges include sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and the Explosives Substances Act, exposing a terror network aimed at advancing ULFA-I’s separatist objectives.
The NIA’s investigation revealed a complex network involving recruitment, training camps, and terrorist activities orchestrated by ULFA-I leadership. Baruah and Arunudoy Dohutia are identified as masterminds, with Abhijeet Gogoi coordinating the assault. Social media platforms were allegedly used for recruiting and training youth, leading to terrorist actions aligned with ULFA-I’s extremist ideology.
