Nine More Killed In Landslides In Meghalaya

SHILLONG, June 17: The continuous heavy downpours for the past few days has claimed nine precious lives including three minors and one six month old in two separate incidents of landslides in the State of Meghalaya.

At least four persons lost their lives in the district of South Garo Hills in the aftermath of one of the worst spells of rains to have ever hit the Garo Hills region. Further the district also witnessed a communication breakdown with many of the strategic bridges that connected parts of the district also being washed away in the flash floods that followed heavy rains.

In another incident of landslide at Dangar in East Khasi Hills District one house was badly damaged in which a family of five person were killed and only one survived.

On Thursday, five people including four minors were killed in two different landslides in East Khasi Hills and West Khasi hills districts.

Such has been the severity of rains in Meghalaya that schools have been shut until June 20.
