Jina Saikia (72), a retired employee of Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd, noted writer, and singer, passed away peacefully at her residence at Panigaon Sankar Mission Path in Nagaon town, on Sunday night. She had been suffering from a prolonged illness for several years.

A former Cultural Secretary of Nagaon Girls’ College, Saikia was actively involved in the Assam Agitation. She authored two books and her essays were regularly published in leading newspapers. Known as a gifted singer, she also earned great acclaim as a recitation artist.

Saikia was the wife of Jadav Saikia, former President of Nagaon Press Club and noted sports journalist. Her demise has cast a pall of gloom over Nagaon.

Tributes poured in from across the district. MLA of Nagaon-Batadroba constituency Rupak Sarma, MP of Dhubri Rakibul Hussain, General Secretary of Nagaon Sports Association Tapan Das, Treasurer Asim Bhowal, Nagaon Press Club, Nagaon Print Media Association, and Nagaon Lekhika Sangstha were among the many individuals and organisations that expressed deep grief at the passing of the enterprising woman. She is survived by her husband Jadav Saikia, only daughter Nidarshana Saikia, son-in-law, grandchildren, and a host of relatives.
