DIPHU, July 1: Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika visited Diphu town in Karbi Anglong and took stock of the flood situation in the district on Monday.
During his visit, Hazarika reviewed the current situation and discussed potential measures to mitigate future flood risks, such as strengthening embankments, dredging rivers, and improving drainage systems.
The minister announced plans to construct a 15 km embankment to protect riverbanks in West Karbi Anglong from flooding, though specific river names were not mentioned.
“In West Karbi Anglong, a 15 km river embankment will be built to prevent erosion from various rivers. The construction of this embankment will ensure safety from flooding in West Karbi Anglong. Additionally, 5 km of embankment work has already been completed in Parokhuwa and Nonmati,” he stated.
Hazarika also mentioned that geo bags, sand bags, and porcupines have been delivered and will be distributed to reinforce riverbanks against erosion. He assured that more materials would be sent if necessary.
The minister reported that Rs 70 crore has been allocated to Karbi Anglong over the past three years specifically for flood relief.
“Flooding is particularly severe in Baithalangso, Bithung, and Rongkhang of West Karbi Anglong,” he added.
In addition to his field assessment, Hazarika convened a meeting at Kajir Ronghangpi Memorial Guest House, Taralangso, with Tuliram Ronghang, chief executive member (CEM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), executive members (EMs) of KAAC, and department officials. The meeting aimed to gather views and suggestions on strategies to reduce flooding in Karbi Anglong.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, the Minister said, “I visited Karbi Anglong to assess the recent floods and discuss measures to minimise flood damage, including embankment erosion control and safeguarding lives and property. We have had productive discussions with the CEM, EMs, and department officials regarding the current flood situation and preventive measures.
