Platinum jubilee of Sibsagar College concludes

SIVASAGAR, Nov 3: The three-day closing function of the year-long platinum jubilee celebration of Sibsagar College ended on Wednesday through a colourful cultural procession and an open session participated by only a few participants other than the teachers of the college and guests.
Inaugurating the open session, Dr Nani Gopal Mahanta, adviser to the government of Assam on education, said that the state government is exploring the possibility of merging the Assam Rajiv Gandhi University of Cooperative Management (ARGUCOM) with the recently declared Sivasagar College Autonomous Institution existing side by side in Joysagar as it is difficult to declare and set up two universities almost on the same place.
Dr Mahanta recollected the contributions of many dedicated persons that had contributed so much to set up the college including its founders Padmadhar Chaliha, Parag Chaliha, Boloram Dutta, and so on.
He added that the Sibsagar College has built up a reputation comparable to a university so long as gaining sponsorship and UGC clearance for diverse projects and its infrastructure is concerned. The meeting was also addressed by Kamakhya Pd Tassa, MP (Rajya Sabha), Dr Jyoti Prasad Saikia, vice chancellor, Birangana Sati Sadhani University, and Dr Debabrat Das, vice chancellor, ARGUCOM.
Dr Prakash Kotoky, president of the celebration committee delivered the welcome address and expressed gratitude to all that contributed to the growth of the institution.
Prof Dilip Das gave a brief description of all the activities undertaken during the platinum jubilee celebrations.
Dr Prafulla Kalita, principal, Sibsagar College, read out the secretarial report. Dr Tridib Mahanta offered a vote of thanks. The college teachers presented the inaugural song ‘Puhor Bisari jau..’
On Tuesday, the session for book release was inaugurated by noted academician, Bhimkanta Konwar who also released the souvenir ‘Bornalee’. In his speech, he paid tributes to Parag Chaliha and other teachers of yesteryears and said that it was the most revered temple of learning for all aspirants of higher education in the district.
Dr Nahendra Padun released three books while Dr Jyoti Prasad Saikia released a literary journal, Sanskritir Alonge Dolonge written by Pabitra Pran Bhattacharjya and Janagosthiya Lok Geet.
Former professor Monica Saikia released Srijoni, 500m Fakara Jojona.
Poet Prema Gogoi also released three books.
Dr Sabysachi Mahanata, principal, Gargaon college, and Aswini Kumar Doley, CEO, Jila Parishad also released three books each.
The concluding ceremony included the inauguration of the book fair, observing alumni meetings, and holding seminars, and cultural programmes on both evenings.
