Guwahati , Nov 05:Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Assam on Dec 20 for a two-day visit to unveil the newly expanded Guwahati Airport and lay the foundation stone for a urea fertiliser plant in Namrup with a capacity of 12 lakh metric tonnes, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said today. The government expects the airport upgrade and the new industrial project to boost connectivity and spur growth in the state.
Sarma, speaking ahead of the visit, drew attention to the national census beginning on Dec 27, stressing that residents will be able to record details including caste and religion. He said the census will also feature financial and social surveys, creating what he described as a clearer picture of Assam’s demography to help shape welfare schemes with greater accuracy.
He also criticised the Congress over its stand on development issues while avoiding comment on the outcome of the recent Bodoland Territorial Council developments. Sarma said the focus remains on governance rather than political sparring.
Calling this a moment of progress for the state, the Chief Minister urged people to take part in the census to ensure reliable data for policy planning. He added that the Prime Minister’s visit reflects a push to strengthen infrastructure, industry and social development across Assam.
