KHERONI, Nov 16: The carcass of a pregnant wild elephant was found between Jiribasa and Wasling villages in Hawaipur, West Karbi Anglong, on Sunday. Villagers discovered the body around 2 AM in a harvested paddy field.
Forest officials who reached the site said the female elephant is suspected to have died due to complications during childbirth.
Villagers gathered to pay respects, offering flowers and lighting incense sticks as a mark of mourning.
Meanwhile, the region has been witnessing increasing man–elephant conflict over the past month. A large herd, including several calves has been raiding crops and entering villages after dusk. According to locals, the elephants rest inside the Reserve Forest during the day and split into smaller groups at night to raid standing crops and nearby settlements.
Farmers say such attacks have been a long-standing problem in West Karbi Anglong, often resulting in losses and posing danger to both humans and elephants.
