TEZPUR, Aug 26: To commemorate the martyrs of 1942 Quit India Movement, the family of the martyrs and the common citizens of the area have been observing Swahid Divas every year on September 20.
Notably, in the Dhekiajuli episode of 1942 Quit India movement, altogether 13 people from Jahamari, Kawoimari and greater Borgaon and Dhekiajuli area laid down their lives in the hands of British while trying to hoist the Indian national flag removing the Union Jack at Dhekiajuli police station in Sonitpur district on September 20, 1942 scripting a history in the Indian independence movement.
To remember the supreme sacrifice of those martyrs on September 20, a public meeting was held on Friday at Kumali Devi Puthi Bharal and freedom fighter Phanidhar Das Memorial Bhawan at Kawoimari here. Held under the chairmanship of noted social worker and retired head master Birendra Kumar Nath and attended by a host of dignitaries including, Ramesh Borah, Dulal Nath, Madhab Saikia, Kamini Kakoti, Hari Borah, Nirud Choudhury, Pradip Nath, Pranabjyoti Saikia, Kamal Nath, Hariprasad Baruah and Lakhan Gowala later executed a celebration committee heading Birendra Kumar Nath as president and Pradip Nath and Pranabjyoti Nath as joint secretary.
Sharing his opinion on how to establish sacrifice of the martyrs of the greater area in the national scenario, Ramesh Bora said that their contribution and supreme sacrifice towards the Indian independence movement should be included in the curriculum of schools and colleges.
Speaking on the occasion along with others of the area, Dr. Hariprashad Baruah provided suggestions on how to observe the day.
Meanwhile, in another redevelopment, noted lawyer of Guwahati High Court and dedicated social worker Subhash Chandara Biswas who has been instrumental in urging the Central and State Government to provide adequate recognition to those martyrs have appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take necessary measures in this regard. In a letter to PM Narendra Modi, advocate Biswas recalling their supreme sacrifice in the 1942 Quit India Movement said that though every year people pay their homage to those martyrs till date they have not been adequately recognised nationally and not even known to other parts of the country.
“For their sacrifice in the freedom struggle, we gained independence. During your last visit to Dhekiajuli, I made an appeal to your honour to accord national recognition to those martyrs of Dhekiajuli area and now on the occasion of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, I once again appeal to your honour with folded palm to give due recognition to those martyrs so that nation may remember their heroic sacrifice for the country,” the noted social worker maintained.
