DIPHU, Sept 15: Widespread protests have broken out in Diphu following the circulation of an alleged sex tape involving local MLA Bidya Sing Engleng. The All Party Hills Leaders Conference (APHLC – JI Kathar faction) burned an effigy of the MLA at Diphu Bus Stand, accusing him of immoral conduct and demanding strict action.
The controversy has sparked outrage across political and civil society groups. The Karbi Anglong District Mahila Congress Committee (KADMCC), a women’s wing of the Congress, also staged a protest in front of the Karbi Anglong Sports Association (KASA) gate. Protesters raised slogans such as “BJP MLA Bidya Sing Engleng down down” and “Go back Bidya Sing Engleng.”

Cherisma Rongpipi, Chairperson of the media cell of Karbi Anglong District Congress Committee (KADCC), stated, “A video of sitting MLA Bidya Sing Engleng engaged in immoral conduct has gone viral on Facebook. As responsible citizens, the Mahila Congress has come forward to denounce such acts. As an MLA, he holds a responsible position, and we did not expect such behaviour.”
In a separate press conference, APHLC President JI Kathar described the viral video as a disgraceful incident. He urged the Governor of Assam, the Chief Minister, and the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly to take action by expelling the MLA. Kathar also demanded the arrest of both Engleng and the woman involved under Sections 68 and 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
The Karbi Nimso Chingthur Asong (KNCA) also condemned the incident. General Secretary Kajek Tokbipi, speaking at a press conference held at the organization’s office, said the incident has brought shame to society.
The Women Karbi Students Association (WKSA) echoed similar sentiments during a press meet held at AK Building near the CEM bungalow. WKSA President Dimi Hansepi stated, “People have elected Engleng as their representative. Being involved in such acts is a disgrace not only to society but to the Assembly constituency he represents. He has no moral right to continue as an MLA and should step down.”
She further demanded that both Engleng and the woman involved be taken before the Karbi customary law court and that the matter be adjudicated as per Karbi customary laws.
As the controversy deepens, pressure continues to mount on the MLA, with growing calls for accountability and action from both the public and political circles.
