Public shraddhanjali offered to lynched AASU leader Animesh Bhuyan at Jorhat

JORHAT, Nov 29: The AASU observed the first death anniversary of slain AASU leader Animesh Bhuyan, on Tuesday, with a public shraddhanjali ceremony at the AT Road Truck Stand site, near Nirmal Chariali here, where Bhuyan was lynched by a mob.
The programme organised by the Jorhat district and sub division units of the students’ body was attended by Animesh Bhuyan’s parents and brother from Dergaon in Golaghat district along with office bearers and members of AASU and the general public.
Floral tributes were paid before the portrait of Animesh and earthen lamp was lit by Nabin Bhuyan, father of Animesh Bhuyan.
A ‘gayan bayan’ troupe and ‘diha naam’ group performed at the venue.
The parents, who broke down while saying that one year has elapsed but they have not received any ruling regarding the culprits.
Among those who attended the ceremony, which was anchored by Niharika Saikia, president, Jorhat sub-divisional unit, were AASU Central Committee assistant general secretary Abhibartan Goswami; state organisational secretary, Jitu Neog; state executive committee member, Dip Dutta and former assistant general secretary and at present JDSA secretary, Jul Khound; and artists & representatives of different organisations.
Abhibartan Goswami condemned the slow way in which the case is progressing and said that the government is yet to set up a fast track court as had been demanded by AASU.
Devajit Baruah, former AASU leader who also spoke on the occasion stated that several crimes including shooting and stabbing has taken place in Jorhat recently and the laxity of police is to be blamed for this and the death of Animesh.
Meanwhile, the district administration has reportedly allotted a plot near Tarajan locality to install a bust of Animesh Bhuyan.
An AASU leader informed that a delegation of the students’ body led by Abhibartan Goswami met the Jorhat deputy commissioner on Monday to discuss the student body’s demand for the bust installation of Animesh.
