KOKRAJHAR, April 16: Rongjali Bwisagu, the traditional spring festival marking the Bodo New Year, was celebrated with cultural fervour and unity across Kokrajhar and other parts of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) on Tuesday.
People from diverse communities came together to mark the last day of Choitra and the first day of Baisakh with festive programmes, dances, and songs.
In Kokrajhar, the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) organized an open Rongjali Bwisagu celebration at the Kokrajhar Government HS & MP School playground, drawing large crowds. The event showcased traditional Bodo customs, music, and dance.
ABSU president Dipen Boro unfurled the student union and Bwisagu flags to open the festivities. “Rongjali Bwisagu is a festival of culture and language, a time when people come together and celebrate with traditional values,” Boro said, extending warm greetings to citizens of the region and the state.
Assam Cabinet Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma, MLAs Lawrence Islary and Jiron Basumatary, ABSU advisor Khungkhra Swargiary, and several senior citizens also joined the celebrations, participating in community dances and songs that emphasized unity and integration in the region.
Bodo women adorned in traditional attire such as Dhokona and Jwmgra added vibrant colour to the celebrations, drawing admiration from attendees and enhancing the festive spirit.
Pramod Boro, Chief Executive Member of the BTR, also extended his greetings on the occasion.
“I’m delighted to extend my heartiest greetings to all citizens on the joyous occasion of Rongjali Bwisagu. May this festive season, which embodies renewed hope, happiness, and harmony, bring peace and prosperity to every home across our region and the state,” he said in a message.
The celebration not only highlighted the rich cultural heritage of the Bodo people but also served as a reminder of the region’s unity in diversity.
