Rupkonwar Natya Utsav gets underway at Jorhat

JORHAT, Jan 20: The four day (January 19-22)Rupkonwar Natya Utsav 2023 was inaugurated by state education minister Dr Ranoj Pegu at the Jorhat Theatre auditorium in the presence of several personalities of the cultural field.

The drama festival got off to a start with staging of the famous play Rupalim, penned by playwright, lyricist, poet, writer and film-maker Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala at the Jorhat Theatre auditorium. The drama has been produced by Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra Samaj and directed by Sangeet Natak Akademi award winner Abinash Sharma.

The event (Rupkonwar Natya Utsav) organised first time outside Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, Guwahati premises, has been organised under the aegis of Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra Samaj in association with Jorhat district administration and Jorhat Theatre, a renowned cultural organisation established more than 125 years back.

Altogether four dramas would be staged each evening and as part of the drama festival two seminars with support from Jagannath Barooah (Autonomous) College, Jorhat, would be organised at the Guna Gobinda Dutta auditorium of the college, on January 21 and 22.

In his address, Dr Pegu complimented the organisers for organising the festival at Jorhat this time with the place known for cultural and literary activities and of historical significance. The minister hoped that Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra Samaj would hold such events outside the state too.

The minister also released a souvenir titled ‘Rupantar’ published by Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra Samaj. Three eminent artistes – Nityanjan Borthakur, Shailen Nath and Jinu Merchant – were felicitated by Pegu on behalf of Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra Samaj in the inaugural function for their contributions in the cultural sphere of the state.

Earlier, a troupe of dancers under the direction of Anjali Borbora presented Mati Akhora and Sattriya dance.

Jorhat MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami, Jorhat deputy commissioner Ashok Kumar Barman, Jorhat SP Mohan Lal Meena, Jorhat Theatre president Dr Jogananda Bora, director of Rupkonwar Natya Utsav 2023 Pradip Pujari, secretary and vice-president of Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra Samaj – Sudarshan Thakur and Jitul Sonowal respectively – and several artistes attended the inaugural programme.
