GUWAHATI, Feb 23 : Assam Legislative Assembly Opposition Leader Debabrata Saikia on Monday said that discussions are still underway with Akhil Gogoi led regional outfit Raijor Dal and no final decision has been taken so far regarding any alliance or seat-sharing arrangement.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the Congress Screening Committee in the national capital, Saikia urged all concerned to refrain from spreading misinformation on the issue.

“Talks with the Raijor Dal are continuing and no decision has been taken till now. I appeal to everyone not to indulge in any kind of misinformation,” he said.

The senior Congress leader clarified that the party is in the process of holding consultations at various levels and that all aspects, including the political situation on the ground, are being carefully assessed before arriving at any conclusion.

He said the party leadership would take an appropriate decision at the right time in the interest of strengthening the opposition.

Saikia also indicated that the Screening Committee meeting focused on organisational matters and the party’s preparedness for the upcoming electoral challenges in Assam, adding that deliberations are being held in a constructive manner to ensure unity and clarity within the party ranks.

Earlier on Monday, Akhil Gogoi warned that excluding his party from the Opposition alliance could prove counterproductive and weaken the collective fight against the BJP in the state.

He asserted that Raijor Dal enjoys strong grassroots support in several constituencies and plays a crucial role in mobilising voters, particularly among youth and marginalised sections.

“If the Raijor Dal is kept out, the alliance will face serious difficulties. Ignoring our contribution will only benefit the BJP,” Gogoi said, adding that Opposition unity is essential to challenge the ruling party effectively.

Gogoi also indicated that while he is open to continued dialogue, the Congress must clarify its stand at the earliest to avoid confusion among party workers and supporters.

He said prolonged indecision could demoralise Opposition cadres and create uncertainty ahead of elections.
